U-23 Indonesian National Team will appear in the 2023 AFF U-23 Cup with the most well-known squad compared to the other contestants, even though the preparation was very minimal.
This is because the U-23 Indonesian National Team squad is reinforced by experienced players. Of the 23 players that Shin Tae Yong summoned to the training camp, for example, seven of them had defended the Indonesian National Team (senior).
In the same squad, there is only one player who has not appeared in Liga 1 this season. Yes, only Daffa Fasya (Borneo FC goalkeeper) who hasn’t had any minutes to play. Nevertheless this is not a big deal.
Ernando Ari Sutaryadi and Adi Satryo are the mainstays of Persebaya Surabaya and PSIS Semarang this season. In other words, it is not impossible that Daffa will only complement the squad.
Furthermore, the eight defenders called by Shin namely Rizky Ridho, Alfeandra Dewangga, Komang Teguh, Bagas Kaffa, Muhammad Ferarri, Dzaky Asraf, Frenky Missa, and Kadek Arel have been known since Indonesia U-16 or U-19.
Likewise with the list of midfield and forward players, all of whom have a promising track record. Only Salim Tuharea, Esal Sahrul, and Muhammad Ragil are the new faces, even though their names are familiar in the competition.
Approximately 50 percent of the squad for the 2023 AFF U-23 Cup are players who won the gold medal at the 2023 SEA Games in Cambodia. This indicates that Indonesia is coming to the championship seriously.
Compare that to Thailand, where more than 70 percent of the squad is different from the 2023 SEA Games. There are only a few names that Issara Sritaro called up for the national team, such as Songchai Thongcham.
Vietnam too. Of the 28 players called Hoang Anh Tuan, most were not major stars. This is because Vietnam is preparing a team to appear in the 2024 U-23 Asian Cup Qualifiers with Philippe Troussier.
Young Vietnamese stars such as Nguyen Van Tung, Nguyen Thai Son and Nguyen Duc Phu, who became mainstays at the SEA Games and did not take part in the AFF Cup. Even so, Vietnam’s preparation took the longest.
Because of that, people also predict that Indonesia will appear at the top of the party and win the title. The 2023 AFF U-23 Cup will take place in Rayong, Thailand from 17 to 26 August 2023.
