In a video posted on Facebook by local authorities on Friday, 30-year-old Tyson Steele made big signs towards the helicopter. In the snow is written a huge SOS.
“His cabin burned down in mid-December killing his dog and leaving him isolated in below freezing temperatures and with no means of communication for 23 days,” writes Alaska police.
The young man was found safe and sound Thursday in this area where he had lived since September, far from any place of residence. He shared his incredible struggle to survive the Alaska States Troopers, who posted it on their website.
“It was an hour or two in the morning and I was awake in this cold cabin,” he said. When he leaves his cottage, the roof is on fire, he says he had just had time to get some things. His dog, on the other hand, does not follow him.
“My dog starts to scream. Inside. And I thought he was not inside, “he said,” I’m getting hysterical (…) I have no words for this pain. “” His name was Phil. Best dog in the world ”.
After the fire, he makes an inventory of what he has left to eat.
“I calculated that I had two cans a day for thirty days of ration. I also had a jar of beans. Two jars of peanut butter – it was melted plastic. I had a jar of mayonnaise but I didn’t touch it, “he smiles, according to the version of his story given to the local police.

That night, it was -26 degrees Celsius according to the authorities.
The first two nights of his survival adventure, Tyson Steele sleeps in a snow cave. He will then build a “makeshift shelter”, according to the authorities.
His phone does not work, the young man has no means of communicating. He is more than 30 kilometers from a residential area and heard that someone lived about 8 kilometers away.
“It had snowed! A huge amount of powder, ”he recalls.
So he decides that his salvation can only come from heaven.
“So I thought if someone was going to come and find me, it would be by air.” The young man then draws with the help of ashes a huge SOS in the snow.
Now unharmed, he will surely return to live in Salt Lake City, Utah, to reunite with his family.
“They have a dog,” he says.
“And that would be some kind of therapy.”
A happier fate than that of Christopher McCandless, hero of the book and the movie “Into the Wild, found dead in Alaska after voluntarily venturing into an uninhabited area.
