Typhoon Megi claims 138 lives in the Philippines

The death toll from tropical storm Megi hitting the Philippines rose to 138, authorities in that country reported this Friday after the Baybay city government announced that so far 101 bodies have been recovered from landslides in several towns of the city.

The central and southern parts of the Philippines were affected by massive flooding and landslides with the central province of Leyte being the worst affected with 132 deaths.

Local police said 31 bodies were recovered in Abuyog city in Leyte province, one in Samar province and two in Cebu province.

For its part, the Philippine military said 159 areas in Capiz, Aklan, Antique and Iloilo provinces in the central Philippines were flooded even as Megi dissipated.

Megi, which made landfall last Sunday, April 10, is the first tropical storm this year to hit the Southeast Asian country. The Philippine archipelago, which is located in the Pacific typhoon belt, is hit by about 20 typhoons and storms every year on average, reports the TeleSur portal.
