Typhoon Lan Approaching Japan’s Western Coast, Train and Flight Cancellations Expected

A strong typhoon is heading towards Japan’s western Kii peninsula on the Pacific coast and is expected to make landfall on Tuesday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said, with heavy rain warnings issued and some trains and flights canceled during Bonn’s annual summer vacation. .

Central Japan Railways said on Sunday that all Tokaido Shinkansen services between Nagoya and Shin-Osaka stations will be suspended on Tuesday, while trains between Tokyo and Nagoya stations will be significantly reduced.

Western Japan Railways said it may cancel services on the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Okayama stations on Tuesday.

Japan Airlines said it canceled 240 flights on Tuesday, mostly to and from Itami airport in western Japan, affecting some 24,800 people.

On Monday, Japan Airlines said it would cancel 19 flights, including Itami’s.

At 9:00 p.m. Sunday, Typhoon Lan was 300 kilometers southwest of Hachijo Island, part of the Izu island chain, about 100 kilometers south of Tokyo, moving northwest. The Japan Meteorological Agency said its atmospheric pressure is 965 hectopascals and there are winds of up to 198 kilometers per hour.

With heavy rain expected from western to eastern Japan through Wednesday, the weather agency warned residents to beware of disasters from landslides and river flooding.

“Since the hurricane is moving slowly, it is feared that its impact will be prolonged,” an agency official said.

The official warned that the Kinki region, which includes Osaka in western Japan and the Tokai region around Nagoya in central Japan, may experience rainfall that exceeds the normal monthly total for August.

The typhoon, after crossing the Japanese mainland, is expected to move north across the Sea of ​​Japan and could approach Hokkaido in northern Japan around Thursday, according to the agency.

Up to 400 to 600mm of rain is expected during the 24-hour period starting at 6:00 pm Monday in the Tokai region and up to 300 to 400mm in the Kinki region.

Adding to the summer events in Tokyo, a rush of returning tourists has begun, with some choosing to return home from their vacation earlier than planned.

Many people traveled for summer vacation for the first time since COVID-19 was legally downgraded to the same category as the seasonal flu.
