Typhoon Khanun Forces Evacuation of World Scout Camp Participants in South Korea

Initially, it was planned that the camp would take place from August 1 to August 12, but the approach of typhoon “Khanun” forced the authorities to evacuate the camp participants.

More than 1,000 buses are used to transport more than 36,000 young people to Seoul and other safer regions. Participants will be accommodated in hotels, student dormitories and study centers at the expense of the South Korean government.

The South Korean government explained that the young people were evacuated as a precaution to guarantee their safety.

The typhoon is moving toward the Korean Peninsula, where it could make landfall on Thursday, the South Korean Meteorological Service said. Strong wind and rain are expected in the country.

The weather has not spoiled the scouts this year. When the camp started, the youngsters experienced great heat and thousands of scouts from Great Britain, USA and Singapore have already left.

A total of 43,000 scouts from 158 countries had registered to participate in the camp. The World Scout Camp is organized once every four years.
