Types of Hazardous Chemicals in Daily Needs Products

TEMPO.CO, JakartaChemical material found in daily necessities, for example in products such as detergents or floor cleaners. In addition, perfume, shampoo, dish soap, and hand sanitizer also contain chemicals.

Although it appears safe and has benefits, repeated exposure to chemicals over time can trigger health problems. In fact, many studies have identified potentially harmful chemicals in everyday products, ranging from cosmetics to food packaging. Here are four common chemicals, which have been linked to long-term adverse health effects Insider.

phthalates
Phthalates are compounds or chemical substances used to give flexibility and durability to polymers. This man-made compound is very common and can be found in thousands of products, including shampoo, makeup, perfume, and some food packaging. Diethylphthalate is the most commonly used phthalate in cosmetics, according to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

You can also see dimethyl phthalate and dibutyl phthalate on ingredients labels, two less commonly used derivatives found in nail polish. Phthalate exposure has been linked to a number of life-threatening conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. The chemical is also known to interfere with hormone function, which can interfere with the reproductive and immune systems, as well as prenatal brain development.

BPA
Bisphenol A (BPA) is plasticizer other common compounds similar to phthalates. Both make plastic easier to bend and last longer. The FDA banned the use of BPA in baby bottles and infant formula packaging in 2012, but claims the compound is safe in food at current levels. However, at least 40 studies have found side effects caused by doses of BPA below FDA standards.

BPA has been linked to obesity, recurrent miscarriage, polycystic ovary syndrome, endometrial hyperplasia, and an increased risk of breast cancer. Exposure to BPA in utero or early childhood can also affect the development of the prostate gland and brain.

PFAS
The alkaline per and polyfluorinated compounds (PFAS) are a group of man-made chemicals used to make a wide variety of everyday products, from food packaging to clothing. They are notoriously slow to decompose, can linger in the environment and the human body for years, causing health problems, including cancer, hormonal imbalances, and fertility problems.

Paraben
Parabens are a group of chemicals that are often used as preservatives for makeup and skin care products. These chemicals can prevent mold and bacteria from growing on the product, extending shelf life. The FDA says parabens are safe for use in cosmetic products in at least the very small amounts, which are normally used. But research shows even small amounts of parabens can pass through the skin and into the body and that can cause problems health.

Methylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben are the three most common parabens to look out for. Many brands have shifted to offering products labeled paraben-free but that may mean they are using other preservatives.
