Tyler Perry, the renowned filmmaker and actor, has decided to halt his planned $800 million studio expansion in Atlanta due to his concerns over the advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Perry expressed the need for regulations to protect the industry from the potential impact of AI, stating, “There’s got to be some sort of regulations in order to protect us. If not, I just don’t see how we survive.”
Perry specifically mentioned OpenAI’s text-to-video tool called Sora as the reason behind his decision to put the expansion on hold indefinitely. He revealed that he has been closely monitoring the advancements in AI and had been planning the expansion for the past four years. The expansion would have significantly increased the studio’s backlot and added 12 more soundstages. However, Perry’s concerns about Sora and its implications have led him to reconsider.
While Perry clarified that he is not against AI and has even used the technology in two of his upcoming films to age himself in post-production, he worries about the potential job losses due to automation. He acknowledged the benefits of AI in assisting with filmmaking, such as creating sets through text instead of physical travel. However, he expressed deep concern for the people working in the industry who could be affected by this technological advancement. Actors, grip and electric teams, transportation crews, sound engineers, and editors are just a few examples of the professionals whose livelihoods could be at risk.
Perry emphasized the importance of valuing human workers amidst the rise of AI. He hopes that as companies embrace this technology to reduce costs and improve their bottom line, there will also be consideration and compassion for the individuals who have dedicated their careers and lives to the entertainment industry.
Recently, Perry extended his partnership with Netflix, signing a multi-year, first-look series agreement in addition to his existing feature film pact with the streaming platform. This collaboration highlights Perry’s continued success and influence in the industry.
While AI undoubtedly offers exciting possibilities for the future of filmmaking, Tyler Perry’s concerns shed light on the potential consequences it may have on the workforce. As the industry navigates this technological transformation, it is crucial to strike a balance between innovation and preserving the livelihoods of those who have contributed to its growth.
