Due to the late decision, Saegeman fears that the nuclear power stations will not be ready until 2027. “We are still counting on a period of five years for all works.” Moreover, according to him, it is “very, very likely” that the power stations will be shut down for the adaptation works between 2025 and 2027. “And then the work and studies have yet to begin to meet all the requirements.”

The obstacles to which Saegeman refers are the purchase of uranium, the amendment of the nuclear phase-out law and the difficult permit procedure. “Action groups such as Tegengas, Stop Nucleair or Greenpeace have said they will challenge any decision. And it is even more complex: the extension work will coincide with the decommissioning of the first five nuclear plants. I am very concerned about it. How are we going to do that. Do we have enough competent people? What do our contractors think about that?”
