NEW YORK (AP) – Two boys, ages 12 and 13, were arrested Saturday in the attack on former Gov. New York David Paterson and his stepfather, police said.
Paterson, 70, and his stepson Anthony Sliwa, 20, were attacked around 8:30pm on Friday when they were out for a walk on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. They were treated in hospital for minor facial injuries.
Paterson, who is legally blind, was also injured in the body.
Both youths were charged with gang assault. The police, who did not disclose the names of the accused because they are minors, said that at least five people were involved in the attack. They have asked the community to provide any information about the incident.
Paterson, a Democrat, was governor from 2008 to 2010, taking office after Gov. Eliot Spitzer to resign amid prostitution scandal. He was the first black man to be the governor of the State of New York.
Paterson said Saturday that his stepfather was walking the dog when he first encountered some of the attackers, who he warned would call the police if they didn’t stop climbing over the emergency exit of a building on Second Avenue. .
Paterson said he and Sliwa – the son of Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa – went for a walk, ran into the group and argued with them until two of them attacked Paterson and the stepson
Peterson said her son fought back several of the attackers, but ended up with a cut to his face that required stitches.
