Two years on the street, I washed under the bridge. The American girl gave me strength, says director Tauš – Echo24.cz

If you haven’t seen the movie, you’ve definitely heard about it. an american girl has entered theaters after a sensational preview week and is also hitting the international circuit. Her main character has already survived a children’s home, foster care and a shepherd – all this at a time when even the totalitarian regime of former Czechoslovakia stood against her. An outstanding film in terms of vision and in terms of content an american girl about a journey into one adult life brought to the world by director Viktor Tauš. His an american girl directly inspired by a girl he met in the 90s on the street.

You became addicted to heroin twice more than twenty years ago. Is it because of the American that you got off the streets?

It can be said simply like that. Dependence makes human interaction impossible, closes a person to himself, separates him from the idea of the context. And I was so moved by the story of a real American woman that it broke the closure. The American girl rekindled my interest in another person. I wanted to understand what was going on inside her. From that moment on, I knew I had nothing to do on the street.

How long have you been homeless?

In case of recurrence, two years. The American girl and I used to make up fictional stories from our childhood on the street that never happened to us. We played at being brother and sister, it gave us strength. We were part of the first generation of freedom victims – homeless people, in the nineties there were mostly thousands of children who, a few years before, had grown up alone, without parents, in socialist orphanages.

What surprised you so much about the American woman, the real one?

She is a good storyteller: she could name with amazing precision the details that brought her to the situation in which she found herself. She knew how to look at herself, but then she didn’t know how to act accordingly and change her situation. I saw this as an interesting contradiction. We have known each other for twenty-five years, we lost each other in that quarter of a century – sometimes for days, sometimes for weeks, months and years, but we still somehow knew each other. When we met it was like we parted yesterday. Now we are in contact almost every day: a real American woman, who is the prototype of the main hero, is an important part of the film crew, after all, she also plays in the film.

Her story, a horrific case of child neglect, once made headlines on Czechoslovak Television in the 1980s…

That’s right, her story was terrible even for that time: two children were locked in the apartment for several days, she took care of her younger brother, changed his diapers, fed the was left … don’t carry it” is true.
