The Frankfurt am Main Higher Regional Court has sentenced a supporter of the jihadist militia Islamic State (IS) and other Islamist organizations to a suspended prison sentence of two years. She was found guilty of membership in a terrorist organization abroad and breach of duty of care, the court announced on Friday.

The Criminal Senate saw it as proven that the now 33-year-old had turned to Islamism by 2008 at the latest. With her husband, whom she married civilly in 2009, and two children aged two years and two months, she traveled to the Afghan-Pakistani border area to join the Islamic Movement Uzbekistan group.

In 2012, her husband was killed in a US drone strike. She was then forced to marry another man. After a few months she managed to escape from the violent relationship. Her third child, the result of this forced marriage, was taken away from her. It was unclear what became of the boy.

The now 33-year-old married again in March 2014. A few months later, she traveled to Syria with this man to join IS. The risk of harm to their children decreased According to the court, the woman accepted this. In Syria, her husband was assigned to security duties with IS. She also integrated herself into the association from the start and submitted to its rules. During this time, the couple had two children.

The woman ran the household and thereby supported her husband. The couple, with a total of four children, lived on the militia’s services. Later he was responsible for caring for the relatives of killed fighters. In order to comply with the gender segregation prescribed by IS, women were involved in activities that required contact with widows.

In 2019, the family fled the anti-IS coalition. She eventually surrendered and was housed in a Kurdish-run camp in northern Syria. In November 2022, the woman returned to Germany with her children and was arrested. She was in custody until January 2023.

According to the court, the woman confessed to the allegations during the trial. She has credibly renounced the ideology of IS. The verdict is final and all those involved in the process have waived their right to appeal.
