Two-Year-Old Martínek’s Story: Over 27 Million Crowns Collected for Treatment, Website Overloaded

The story of two-year-old Martínek with the rare genetic disease AADC caused a huge wave of solidarity among people. His story was shared by many celebrities on social networks, and people have already collected over 27 million crowns for his treatment. But he needs a hundred of them. After the broadcast of Saturday’s report, the website where people donate to his treatment even collapsed under a huge onslaught. However, the family may lose part of the collected money.

Unavailable website and countless social media posts. The story of two-year-old Martínek, who is only one dose away from death, has touched the hearts of thousands of people.

“Yesterday surpassed Friday night! At this moment we know that you have sent more than 7 million crowns and you have added another 15 thousand. But that’s not all, payments from transfers and QR payments will be added to us tomorrow, so follow the situation with us, we will to inform you,” reported the Donio portal, on whose website you can donate to Martínek’s treatment.

However, due to website overload, the operators recommend using a transfer to an account or payment by QR code.

Martínk’s father, who founded the collection when the insurance company refused to pay for the expensive treatment, definitely did not expect that the story would cause such a response.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who participated in spreading information about Martínek and who are fighting for him, whether they are my friends, acquaintances, friends, reporters, lawyers, famous personalities, Nikol Štíbrová, I am fighting for him, for Marta, for our whole family, I thank you very much and sincerely and humbly,” he said.

The story also caused disillusionment

In addition to solidarity, the story of sick Martínek also caused great disillusionment among people. Many respondents think that the Minister of Health Vlastimil Válek (TOP 09) should start solving the case, who should have everything with the insurance company and the drug manufacturer. In addition, it turns out that if 100 million crowns are really collected for Martínek’s treatment, there is a risk that part of this sum will be forfeited to the state, because such a large collection must be taxed according to Czech law.

The rare AADC syndrome that Martínek suffers from seems to be an unsolvable problem for the Czech healthcare system. According to the Minister of Health, the company that manufactures the medicine itself is to blame for the complexity of the situation.

“What is completely incomprehensible to me is that the manufacturer has zero interest in the medicine being paid for in the Czech Republic. He did not contact me or SÚKL,” he declared. It is said that the problem will be solved at the European level.

Martínek’s dad is also troubled by another thing, if the astronomical sum is collected for treatment, part of it will be swallowed up by taxes. “Unfortunately, at the moment when we exceeded the amount of five million, I was contacted by Donia that they found out that the collected funds need to be taxed here above that amount,” he said.

In the past, ex-minister of finance Alena Schillerová (ANO) dealt with a similar situation, who wanted to waive the taxation of money from the collection. “Which I couldn’t do according to the law, but it brought me to the case and I got involved in it, we talked with insurance companies, we negotiated within the European Commission, we just looked for different ways. In the end, we managed to solve it,” she said.

According to the current management of the Ministry of Finance, the tax relief must be discussed individually, in the past collections for damages caused by a tornado in South Moravia were exempted from tax.
