Two trailers, two cars and a bus blown off the road in northern Norway

The storm has arrived in the north.

Strong winds and bad weather have been reported in northern Norway on Tuesday and Wednesday. In exposed locations, the meteorologist has issued a danger warning for strong winds.

And in the morning hours, the forecast of the meteorologists would turn out to be correct. For the police in Finnmark report strong winds on the E6 south of Karlebotn in Troms and Finnmark.

Trailers blown off the road

– Two cars and two trailers must have been blown off the road. No injuries are reported, the police write.

The emergency services are on their way to the scene.

Operations manager in the Finnmark police district, Ann Rigmor Søderholm, tells VG that they are working to get an overview of the incident. At 08:30 the police had not yet arrived at the scene.

– With both slippery conditions and icy roads, the conditions will be demanding. People must drive carefully.

It was one of the trailer drivers who reported the traffic accident.

– We don’t know everything right now. It is a bit special with two cars and two trailers in the same area. But here it is very open. You hear that cars are blown off the road in Finnmark, but not that often there.

According to Søderholm, it has been sprinkled on the stretch in question. The strong wind, on the other hand, makes the sand and gravel not stick to the road.

Bus ended up in the ditch

On county road 17 in Meløy, a bus has blown off the road, the police in Nordland state. There is only the driver and two passengers in the bus, and no injuries have been reported.

Operations manager Ulf Slettan in the Nordland police district tells VG that the bus has ended up in the ditch, but is standing on all four wheels.

– It does not appear to be a serious accident, but there is strong wind in the area, says Slettan.

They have not yet received reports of other accidents due to the storm, but the operations manager points out that there is strong wind and heavy rainfall in the district.

The Swedish Road Traffic Center informs that county road 17 is closed. The bus is blocking parts of the road, which is not possible to pass.

The weather also affects traffic in Troms. The ferry between Breivikdeidet and Svensby has been canceled due to the weather. This is reported by Troms County Traffic.

Assessing orange hazard warning

– Now it’s almost quiet before the storm, so it’s almost a bit disturbing that there are already cars that have blown off the road, says state metrologist Iselin Skjervagen to VG.

On Tuesday, a frontal system coming in over northern Norway creates a lot of wind and rain.

– There are two air masses with different temperatures, a cold wall meets heat. Then you get a lot of wind and turbulence, and atmospheric disturbances, says Skjervagen.

On Tuesday, danger warnings for heavy rain have been issued in the northernmost parts and by Nordand and Sør-Troms.

– There can be 30-50 mm in 12 hours, she says.

A gust warning has also been issued that applies to the coastal areas of Troms and Vest-Finnmark.

– It doesn’t quite start yet, but I’m guessing from 12 o’clock until evening, says Skjervagen.

Then there may be wind gusts of 27/33 m/s.

– People should secure loose loops, avoid unnecessary traffic in exposed places along the coast and be careful when traveling in the beach zone. It might be a good idea to wear spikes and rain gear if you want to go out, but it’s probably a nice day to be inside, says Skjervagen.

Skjervagen states that the Meteorological Institute is considering an orange hazard warning for Wednesday.

– There will be a new system tomorrow. Tomorrow we have a yellow warning for strong gusts of wind, which applies for almost the whole of Wednesday, but it is continuously assessed whether there will be an orange warning, she says.

It is also being considered whether the danger warning for rain in Lofoten and Ofoten should become an orange warning.

35-50 mm of rain in 12 hours is currently forecast.
