Two young men from Upper Austria got lost on Wednesday on the Schafberg near St. Gilgen (Flachgau). Rescue workers from the air and later on the ground brought them back to safe terrain not far from the sky gate on the north-west flank of the mountain. The second mission lasted late into the night.

On the ascent, the two hikers aged 20 and 21 left the path on Wednesday afternoon and followed a narrow path that led them into increasingly impassable terrain until they could neither forward nor backward, reports the police.
After the emergency call, the crew of the police helicopter started at Salzburg Airport. She quickly discovered the duo from the Braunau am Inn district. The pilot dropped his flight rescuer and police mountain guide on the steep terrain. This led the Upper Austrians back to the marked hiking trail. The men wanted to go down into the valley alone.
Second emergency call in the evening
A little later, the Upper Austrians involuntarily left their hiking trail a second time and now followed a difficult hunting trail until they got lost again. In the evening they made their second emergency call.
The police helicopter team started again in Salzburg and sighted the lost people around 9:15 p.m. Because of the falling darkness and the heavily wooded and steep terrain, a helicopter rescue was no longer possible. Therefore, mountain rescuers from St. Gilgen have now been alerted. The team of six climbed up for around an hour, provided the men with food and drink and brought them down to the valley. “Both were fine and unharmed, only complained of exhaustion,” said the police report.
Route planning important
The Salzburg mountain rescue service asks hikers to plan their tours precisely before each start in the mountains – including route and map studies, estimation of the walking times and consideration of the weather report. There could be severe heat thunderstorms in the next few days.
