Two-thirds postpone winter sports holiday for a while: whoever goes, chooses France

Eleven percent of Flemish people have plans to go on winter sports. While the spring break was the most popular winter sports holiday before corona, one in three Flemish people who go on winter sports say they will do so during the Christmas holidays, and another third go outside the school holidays. This is apparent from the VAB travel barometer that the organization will publish on Sunday.

VAB, in collaboration with Ipsos, questioned 2,000 Flemish people in the period from the end of November to the beginning of December.

A quarter of Flemish people who regularly went on winter sports before COVID-19 indicate that they are really looking forward to it this year, because it has been so long. Yet a large proportion of winter sports enthusiasts are not yet sure whether they would go now, fully in the fourth wave: 68 percent of regular winter sports enthusiasts postpone their holiday for the time being.

Most Flemings who go skiing this winter choose Austria (39 percent). During the Christmas holidays, France appears to be the most popular destination with 39 percent, compared to 27 percent for Austria. VAB sees as a possible explanation that you can ski in France with a COVID Safe Pass and that the corona measures in Austria are a lot stricter (the 2G policy, vaccination certificate is only valid for 9 months, Janssen vaccine will no longer be accepted from 3 January).

A winter sports holiday is mainly a car holiday: 7 out of 10 Flemish people go to the winter sports destination by car. Yet only 1 in 2 Flemings who will certainly go on winter sports this winter season indicate that they have winter tires at their disposal. Since November 1, it is mandatory in the mountain areas in France to drive on winter tires or carry snow chains in the car between November 1 and March 31. In several other winter sports or transit countries, winter tires have been mandatory for some time, VAB points out.
