Two-thirds of breast cancer patients go to the doctor when they are in an advanced stage

JawaPos.com – Early detection of breast cancer can further increase the chances of cure and treatment. Unfortunately, most patients in Indonesia come to the doctor in a late condition, which is already an advanced stage.

In the SADARI and SADANIS campaign actions by PT Uni-Charm Indonesia Tbk and the Pink Ribbon Action by YKPI (Indonesian Breast Cancer Foundation), Surgeon Oncology and Chairman of the Central Board of the Indonesian Association of Oncological Surgeons (PERABOI) dr. Walta Gautama, Sp.B(K)Onk explained that there are still around 70 percent of breast cancer patients who come to the hospital already in an advanced stage. Whereas if breast cancer is detected early, there will be more treatment options and the chance of survival will also be greater.

“Healing can reach 95 percent if detected at the first stage,” he recently said online.

That way, the patient’s quality of life will increase and minimize the death rate from breast cancer in Indonesia. Therefore, it is important to carry out early detection by every Indonesian woman so that she can find out early if there are changes in her breasts.

When is Breast Cancer Early Detection Done?

Self-detection can be done regularly every month. Done on days 7-10 after the first day of menstruation, or a certain date for those who have menopause.

Breast cancer is still a threat to Indonesian people, especially Indonesian women. According to data from The Global Cancer Observatory in 2020, breast cancer in Indonesia is the most common cancer found in women with a proportion of 30.8 percent of the total cases of other cancers, which are 65,858 new cases. Meanwhile, breast cancer in Indonesia ranks as the second leading cause of cancer death with a percentage of 9.6 percent.

One of the causes of the high incidence and mortality of breast cancer is the low public awareness of early detection and clinical breast cancer examination, which according to research by the Ministry of Health in 2016, the penetration rate of BSE is 46.3 percent.
