Two Things That Increase Stroke Risk in 1 Hour

Instant stroke without much warning in advance.

Stroke is the leading cause of death and disability globally. These conditions can occur instantly without much warning beforehand.

But experts say that when stroke really happened, it’s actually not without cause. Certain activities can significantly increase risk of stroke even in just a few minutes. There are at least two things that can increase the risk of stroke by up to 60 percent within 60 minutes (one hour). Best Life Online, Thursday (9/12).

Strenuous physical activity

Strenuous physical activity can increase the risk of stroke within an hour. The 2021 global study, led by NUI Galway, analyzed 13,462 cases of acute stroke. The result is that strenuous physical activity can increase the risk of stroke within one hour of completing exercise. In fact, one in 20 stroke patients included in the study had performed strenuous activity just prior to their stroke.

A study published in American Journal of Epidemiology reached the same conclusion a decade earlier. Physical activity during the hour before stroke symptoms appeared compared with the frequency of usual physical activity during the previous year. “Of the 390 subjects, 21 (5 percent) reported having performed moderate or vigorous physical activity during the hour prior to the onset of ischemic stroke, and six subjects had lifted an object weighing at least 50 pounds (22.6 kilograms),” the authors wrote.

Andrew Smyth, a professor of clinical epidemiology at NUI Galway, explains that the team’s findings can help predict and reduce stroke risk. The consultant nephrologist at Galway University Hospital said the study focused on medium to long-term exposures, such as hypertension, obesity or smoking. “Our study aims to look at acute exposures that can act as triggers,” he said.

Even more troubling is the association between strenuous physical activity and the risk of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). This is a life-threatening condition because it is caused by the rupture of a small artery in the brain tissue, causing bleeding in the brain. As many as 10 percent of strokes are reported to be caused by ICH, and this condition has a 40 percent mortality rate. “About 70 percent of patients have long-term deficits after ICH,” notes the Mayfield Clinic physician group.

According to NUI Galway researchers, people are significantly more likely to experience this type of stroke immediately after strenuous physical activity. Strenuous physical exercise was associated with an approximately 60 percent increased risk of intracerebral hemorrhage within one hour of strenuous activity.
