Two teachers from the Balearic School of Dramatic Art are fired for inappropriate behavior

Two teachers from the Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático de Baleares have been fired after the complaint filed by 56 students from the center who accused the two dismissed of harassment and inappropriate behavior. The decision was made by the Board of Trustees of the Fundació per als Estudios Superiors de Música i Dansa de les Illes Balears (FESMAE-IB) after weeks of complaints from students. The board of trustees has waited to have in their hands the reports of the Community Advocacy of the Institut Balear de la Dona and the Educational Inspectorate.

All these reports conclude that the events denounced by the students have absolute credibility because they have been received in the same way by a good part of the students, and there are more than enough testimonies to consider them credited, as the Balearic Government points out in a statement. One of those fired is the director of the School, Pere Fullana, who had already been temporarily removed from his position.

The motives

The Government makes the decision due to the “seriousness” of the denounced events

The Government informs that the decision to end the employment relationship of these two teachers has been taken “due to the seriousness of the denounced events and to ensure the protection of the students, which is the highest good that must be borne in mind.” The dismissal occurs because it is the only drama school that exists on the islands, it is prevented by their transfer or another center that distances them from the complaining students.

At the same meeting, the Board has also approved a draft protocol for the prevention of harassment, which will be negotiated shortly with the works council. A new provisional management team has also been approved, made up of Maite Villar as director, Joan Manel Albinyana, as head of studies and Irene Pasqual, as secretary.

The Minister of Education, Martí March, explained that, in the coming weeks, he plans to hold meetings with the faculty, students and different groups from the theater sector of the islands to address the implementation of new lines of work that help to promote the Higher School of Dramatic Art of the Balearic Islands.
