Two Swiss architects in New York

Lorenzo Pagnamenta and Anna Torriani have been working in the USA since 1992. You have received a Special Award for Excellence from the City of New York for designing the Mariners Harbor Branch Library on Staten Island.

The work of the two Swiss architects from Manhattan was rewarded for their intelligent use of space, the energy balance, the consideration of environmental issues and, finally, for their design, as the then Mayor of New York said at the award ceremony.

After all these years, Lorenzo Pagnamenta and Anna Torriani are still a bit Swiss, but inevitably have also become a bit American. They became known for an architecture that transforms libraries, reading rooms and event rooms into places that are more accessible, less “unaesthetic”, more humane, more livable and modern for everyone, without being “cold and empty”.

But why did you leave Switzerland for New York years ago? How is work on the other side of the Atlantic? And do they really love books so much that they dedicate themselves to developing places like libraries?

She met Claudio Moschin at work in her Manhattan office, on the 31st floor of a skyscraper overlooking Broadway.

Anna Torriani studied at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) and then worked for various studios in Switzerland and New York.

In 2006 she became co-director of the New York section of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

Since 2010 she has been a member of the Advisory Committee for the Renewal of the United Nations Headquarters (UN).

Lorenzo Pagnamenta After completing his degree at the ETH, he worked with Paul Rudolph in an engineering office in Manhattan before he founded the “Atelier PT” with Torriani.

He has taught in New York, Lausanne and Palermo. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Swiss Institute of Art in New York.

Both are also painters, and some of their works are part of international collections.
