In one case, the person arrived from the Republic of South Africa, and in another case – from Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (with a transfer to Frankfurt). Both vaccinated people are currently in solitary confinement at home.
The Department of Health has indicated that both individuals have been identified as having a mutation in the omicron strain, but that they have not yet been confirmed to be infected with the omicron strain.
To date, no cases of omicron infection have been confirmed in Estonia.
A new variant of Covid-19 with a large number of mutations was reported in the Republic of South Africa on 24 November, due to a rapid increase in the number of infections in that country.
The 15th letter of the Greek alphabet – omicron – has been assigned to denote the new type of virus.
The spread of the new variant has already led to warnings that more than half of the new cases of Covid-19 in Europe in the coming months may be of this type.
