A super full moon is an astronomical phenomenon when the Moon is full and at the same time as close to Earth as possible. At that moment, it appears larger and brighter than usual. The distance between the Earth and the Moon changes according to the elliptical path along which the Moon moves around our planet. At its closest point (perigee), the Moon is about 356,000 kilometers from Earth, and at its farthest point (apogee) about 407,000 kilometers.
According to astrologer Richard Nolle, who first used the term, a superfull moon occurs when the Moon is less than or equal to 90% of its shortest distance from Earth in its orbit. So it’s not just one closest point. The first August super full moon will have the Moon 357,307 km away from the Earth, the second August super full moon – August 30 – only a little less – 357,185 km.

Although the full moon will occur in the evening at 20:33, it will not be possible to observe it immediately. The moon will rise less than an hour later, in Ústí nad Labem specifically at 9:18 p.m. The weather forecast so far sounds quite promising, the cloud cover could break on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, August 2.
Super full moons are relatively rare, usually occurring once every fortnight. In 2023, however, we will see two super full moons in one calendar month, which is even more rare. The second full moon in the same month is called a blue supermoon. The name comes from the English combination “once in a blue moon”, translated as “once in a Hungarian year.”

If you want to see super full moons in the sky, we recommend choosing a place with as little light pollution as possible and observing the moon just after its rise or before its set (which occurs before 6 a.m. on Wednesday). At that moment, the Moon will be low on the horizon and appear even bigger and brighter. You can also use binoculars or a good zoom camera to see the details of the lunar surface.
If you manage to take a nice photo of the supermoon, we will be happy to publish your picture. Send it to us by email [email protected]. Thank you
