Two Supermarket Closures in Beaumont-sur-Oise: Economic Problems Force Intermarché to Shut Down

Two supermarket closures in five months in Beaumont-sur-Oise in Val-d’Oise. After G20 in January, Intermarché has just announced an imminent closure due to economic problems. The inhabitants will soon be obliged to do their shopping in neighboring municipalities.

On June 30, it will no longer be possible to shop at the Intermarché de Beaumont-sur-Oise because it will definitely close down. “There were a lot of things missing on the shelves (…) we put it down to the strikes but I really didn’t think it was going to close, I was really surprised” ensures a loyal customer. “It bothers me because I had my product habits: very good meat, very good fish. For some time we had realized that the staff were leaving one after the other and then the boxes were not put away” adds another consumer.

The thirty employees discovered on Friday that their contract was ending in a month due to economic difficulties, but none dared to speak out. Intermarché did not wish to answer us.

In the mall, the other three shops are forced to leave. At the head of a hair salon for eleven years, Caroline Thomas is distraught: “I have to dismiss my employee, I don’t know for what reason. I am a manager so no unemployment afterwards (…) so there is a disaster, I don’t know what happens next”.

Next, the town hall of this town of 10,000 inhabitants is trying to prepare it by looking for buyers. No tracks yet but regrets, that of being up against the wall and suffering from inflation in Beaumont-sur-Oise. “We have average salaries which are still quite low compared to the national level so it’s true that it’s complicated for everyone to be able to go shopping. Intermarché is still expensive so the goal would be to find the possibility of having a Lidl, an Aldi or an HMarket” for Jean-Michel Aparicio, mayor of the town.

Five months after the closure of the G20 for management problems at the other end of the city, the town hall thinks it has found a buyer but remains cautious. The sale of commercial premises and the takeover by a brand takes months, the people of Beaumont are therefore condemned to buy elsewhere.
