Two sixes were found dead – 2024-09-05 19:12:16

Saimaa norpa cubs were found drowned in walleye nets.

Two Saimaa roe cubs were found drowned in walleye nets, Metsähallitus informs.

The first dead Kuutti was found in fishing gear on Monday in Taipalsaari, and the second one was found in Haukivedi in Rantasalmi on Tuesday.

The Metsähallitus received information about the dead six from fishermen.

Walleye nets were allowed to be used in Saimaa. They were held in a restricted fishing area, where net fishing is prohibited from 15.4. to 30.6. in between.

22 of the cubs born this year have been found dead. Three of them have drowned in fishing gear. The less-than-meter-long roe deer that died in Taipalsaari was probably this year’s six.

– Suffocation in the net is always, even later in the fall, additional human-caused mortality for the endangered porcupine population. Unfortunately, the age range of those born this year is going to be small anyway due to the weak nesting conditions in spring, says the special expert of nature conservation Riikka Alakoski Metsähallitus’ bulletin.
