Two sisters die in stormy weather in Italy

The accident happened this morning at a campsite in the coastal town of Marina di Massa, in Tuscany. The two victims were sleeping in a tent with the rest of their families, when around 7 a.m., a 4.5-meter-high poplar tree was blown over and fell on the tent.

The 3-year-old girl died on the spot, her 14-year-old sister died a little later in the hospital. Another sister sustained minor injuries, the parents were unharmed.

Bad weather had been predicted in the region. The wind speeds this morning reached almost 100 kilometers per hour. The Italian court has now opened an investigation to see if there is any liability, the campsite manager has already been heard by the police.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has expressed his condolences via Twitter to the affected family, who live in Turin but spent a few days vacation in Tuscany. Other political leaders are also responding to the tragic incident. “Weather warnings should never be underestimated,” the president of the neighboring region of Liguria writes in his post on Twitter.
