Two Sides of Customer ‘Protection’ in the Telkom and Netflix Story

Bisnis.com, JAKARTA – Just 2 months ago, PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Persero) Tbk. ‘made up’ with the video streaming service provider Netflix. Precisely on July 7, 2020, the state-owned telecommunications company unblocked Netflix, which has been in progress since 2016.

However, in recent days the customers of both companies have been worried because they are worried that the blocking will be carried out again. The reason is Telkom’s statement that alludes to the large bandwidth requirements for streaming the Video-on-Demand (VoD) platform.

In an official statement received by Bisnis, Monday (21/9/2020), Telkom’s Vice President for Corporate Communication Arief Prabowo said that the presence of Netflix service on the Telkom Group network cannot be separated from a shared commitment to providing quality content and prioritizing the interests and convenience of customers in Indonesia.

However, the increase in Netflix subscribers has also raised bandwidth requirements because streaming video content requires large bandwidth. Therefore, the issuer with the TLKM stock code stated that more efforts are needed to make all customers comfortable.

He continued that currently, the Netflix service requires access outside Indonesia with bandwidth that continues to grow and dominate, so that it has the potential to cause inconvenience not only for Netflix users but also for other internet content users.

“Especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, which made activities more carried out from home, the wider community really needs internet access, especially for the needs of education, work, health and public services,” said Arief.
