Two women were seriously injured in two separate collisions in Mortsel on Tuesday. A pedestrian (71) was hit by a truck in the morning and was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition. A cyclist (19) was hit by a van later in the day.

The accident between the pedestrian and the truck happened on Tuesday morning, at the major intersection of Antwerpsestraat, Mechelsesteenweg, Statielei and Edegemsestraat.
“The woman crossed the road and was hit by the truck,” said Marlies Thys of the Minos police zone. “The woman suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition. The circumstances of the accident are being further investigated.”
A witness saw the accident happen. “The first care was given by a doctor who just passed by after a night shift. She also stayed with the woman until emergency services arrived. The victim was very shocked, but still conscious,” says Eline. “The problem is that the traffic lights at this location are not properly adjusted. Two years ago, an accident happened here with a woman and a truck.”
Second accident
Tuesday evening, around 6.30 pm, there was another serious collision on the Mechelsesteenweg. A cyclist crossing the road was not noticed by the driver of the van.
The 19-year-old woman hit the windshield of the van with a bang. “She was taken to hospital with injuries, but luckily she was not in a life-threatening condition,” said the police spokesperson.
