The incident took place on Tuesday morning, the Lithuanian Armed Forces said.
“At about 9:45 yesterday, two Russian military planes allegedly violated Lithuanian airspace over the country’s territorial waters in the Baltic Sea,” Major Gintauts Qunis, a spokesman for the Lithuanian Armed Forces, told BNS on Wednesday.
“They were supposed to be two Su-24s,” Qunis said.
Later, Lithuanian officials confirmed that the airspace violation had taken place.
Both Russian bombers spent about a minute in Lithuanian airspace.
A representative of the Russian Embassy has been summoned to the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to whom a protest note has been submitted.
Lithuanian Minister of Defense Arvīds Anušausks told the BNS news agency that the airspace violation could be related to the international military exercise “Baltops” taking place in the area.
“I think they are interested in this area, because Baltops is training there,” Anušausks said.
Two Russian military planes have already been reported on Tuesday Estonian airspace.
According to the General Staff of the Estonian Defense Forces, two Su-35S fighters arrived in Estonian airspace around Hiiumaa on Tuesday morning.
The transponders of both aircraft were switched off, they did not have a flight plan and they did not communicate with Estonian air traffic controllers.
In connection with this incident, a Russian Chargé d’Affaires ai has been summoned to the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to whom a note has been submitted.
This is the fourth time this year that Russian aircraft have violated Estonian airspace.
