They were as magnificent as they were impressive. The Lille zoo (North) had to resign itself to the departure of its two largest animals, the white rhinoceroses Eno and Mapenzi. They set off for two new zoos in Israel.

Have the two rhinos left the Lille zoo?

Welcomed in the capital of Flanders when they were 3 years old, the two rhinos have now reached sexual maturity and have flown to the zoological parks of Jerusalem and Ramat Gan. In a article on his websitethe City announced the news, recalling that the two animals “are part of a European program aimed at monitoring and managing the population of a species bred in captivity”.

Indeed, despite the increase in the white rhino population in recent years, “the survival of the species remains fragile”. Coveted for its horn, the white rhino is regularly targeted by poachers.

Their reproduction in wildlife parks is thus an “important element of conservation and constitutes a potential reservoir for the reintroduction of animals into their natural environment”.

New animals will arrive

The departure of the two behemoths leaves a huge empty enclosure in the park. They are unlikely to be replaced by other rhinos.

“The Terres d’Afrique space will be remodeled into a new biodiversity zone. New species poorly represented in zoos will be welcomed in line with the conservation missions in which the zoo team is body and soul committed,” announces the City.

To be continued.
