Two residents died in a fire in a residential care center in H …

In a fire in a residential care center in Lessen, in the province of Hainaut, two women were killed on Sunday afternoon. The municipal emergency plan and the medical intervention plan were activated.

Just before five o’clock, the local fire brigade received a report of a fire in a room of the rest home La Résidence in the rue de l’Hotellerie in Lessen. It was only an hour and a half later, around 6.30 pm, that the fire could be overpowered. All help came too late for two residents. ‘Two residents of the home have died. I have appointed a fire expert and am now going to the scene, ”said Virgine Pierrard, deputy for the Tournai-Mons Prosecutor.

To fight the fire, firefighters arrived with tankers and pump trucks from the barracks of Lessen, Aat and Leuze-en-Hainaut. The staff of the retirement home and the fire brigade evacuated the residents to the sports center. A reception and triage post was set up in the cultural center of Lessen.

Now that the fire has been extinguished, the residents are allowed to return. ‘In the course of the evening, some sixty residents will be able to move into the ventilated building again,’ said Olivier Lowagie, commander of the Wallonie picarde fire brigade zone.
