Baptiste Daie and William Deguingand won the departmental and regional gold medal in the competition for the best apprentice in France (MAF) in Refrigeration and Air conditioning, October 1, 2020. The departmental and regional test of the prestigious competition took place on the Châtaigneraie campus, in Mesnil-Esnard, near Rouen (Seine-Maritime). Since 1985, date of its creation, the competition for the best apprentices in France is organized by the National Society of the Best Craftsmen of France (MOF), first at the departmental level, then regional and national since 2001. More than 6,000 candidates register each year in more than 90 professions.
Meeting with one of the young people in gold
Baptiste Daie, one of the laureates, is presented by his teacher Laurent Ternois: “When the students are in first year, I offer them the MAF competition. I suggested it to Baptiste because he is brilliant and has followed a particular path. He did in six months what he should have done in 3 years ”. Indeed, after a BAC STMG (management management) in 2018, Baptiste worked for a year in interim. “I couldn’t find a business in communication”. Then, in 2019-2020, he chose a reorientation in Bac Pro TFCA (refrigeration and air conditioning technician). After a year of first, he skips the terminal and since September, follows his first year of BTS.
Why the cold?
“Since I was little, I hear about this branch because my father works there. I came to the open house of the school and I liked it. I work in a work-study program and I learn a lot in business. I was able to make up for the final year and even my second second thanks to that, ”explains the 20-year-old.
Workshop time had been made available at the end of the day for the two winners. “For the competition, we had a piece to do independently with a methodology report. It took about a hundred hours of work. We presented it on 1is October, with a practical test. This is where you can earn points because these are the basic operations of a refrigeration engineer, ”says Baptiste.
Learning autonomy
“They have merit because we must remember that they had a truncated year because of the pandemic linked to Covid-19. We, teachers, intervened very little in the preparation of the competition. They did everything from A to Z, from the search for parts to the realization. They often worked at home, ”adds their teacher Laurent Ternois.
“I had never done a competition, but I thought why not? There too I learned a lot, ”concludes Baptiste, who later wants to work in a thermal design office.
Appointment is given for the national meeting, in Cholet, in Perpignan? Nothing is fixed yet.
