In May of this year, the production “Smart Dog Soņa” was made in the Russian troupe of the theater – under the direction of the actor and director of the Puppet Theater Yuri Lunik. In the autumn, the show was also staged in a Latvian troupe, telling the story of the little dog Soņa, who unknowingly finds himself in various awkward and unpleasant situations. But how do you know at such a young age how to behave politely, do the right thing and not get into trouble? Fortunately, Sona has good friends and advisors who help solve problems and understand how to avoid them in the future. The performance is intended for children from the age of three and was created by a creative team consisting of director Yuri Lunik, playwright Igor Yakimov, artist Anita Znutiņa-Šēve and composer Mikus Frischfeld. Starring Kristīna Varša, Arnita Jaunzeme and Pēteris Galviņš.
The first full-fledged production as a full-time director was created by Edgars Niklasons, using his own story “Katliņpauris” as his literary basis, which he reworked for the needs of the stage. Katliņpauris is a strange man who lives a closed life and does not like the noisy and brazen children of his neighbors, whom he inevitably meets on a daily basis. The story of understanding the incomprehensible, or trying to see under the “pot” that we have each placed on ourselves to protect ourselves from the cruel world. What is empathy? How does it help people make friends? What to do when the “pot” has fallen and you have to choose – put it back in your head or trust your fellow human beings and indulge in adventure?
In his creative team, Edgars Niklasons has invited artist Evita Bēta, music author Kaspars Niklasons, lighting artist Uldis Andersons, movement consultant Jānis Putniņš and actors Daci Vītols, Miķelis Žideļūnas, Matīss Millers and Rihards Zelezņš. The director says about the creative process: “Working on the performance Katliņpauris is full of challenges for all members of the creative team. Hand in hand, we have created the world of Katliņpaura, everyday life and events around him. Katliņpauris himself has also become a lone hero of his time from an originally intended individual. The main character Dace Vītols “paints” the image of Katliņpaura as a pedestrian, convincingly feeling the mood of his soul and opening unspoken dimensions of this character. I was interested to see how the original “frame” of the story changed during the process; as we renounced the superfluous, descriptive, we opened up an ever-expanding space in which the viewer could “breathe.” This is a family show that reveals lifelong topics such as exclusion, eviction and breaking boundaries with fellow human beings. I very much hope that this work will encourage parents and children to discuss the issues we face on a daily basis from an early age. ”
During the renovation of the Latvian Puppet Theater building, performances will take place at the Riga Latvian Society House at 13 Merkela Street.
