During Tuesday’s session, two large earthquakes originated in Chile. The first was of a magnitude 6.8 on the Richter scale, it began in the Atacama region during the early morning. The second occurred during the afternoon with a magnitude of 6.3 degrees, beginning in the area of the Pacific Ocean, near the Chilean coast. The latter produced aftershocks that were felt with power in some provinces of Argentina: Mendoza, San Juan and Córdoba.
Through local media and social networks, citizens of the affected provinces claimed to have felt the earthquake.

The National Emergency Office of the Ministry of the Interior and Public Security (ONEMI) of Chile, indicated that no injuries were reported to people. In addition, it was assured that the characteristics “do not meet the necessary conditions to generate a tsunami off the coast of Chile.”
Regarding these tectonic movements, in dialogue with TN, the Chilean journalist José María Del Pino affirmed that a part of the Pacific plate was activated in the northern part of Chile and that due to this the tremors were felt both in his country and in the Argentine territory.
He earthquake originated in the neighboring country during the afternoon had more than 40 aftershocks in the following hours, one of them reached 5.6 on the Richter scale.
The ONEMI reported that the most serious problems were experienced in Copiapó, a city located 800 kilometers from the capital of Santiago, where the destruction of roofs of houses and the leakage of a pool on the terrace of a central building that flooded the elevators.
In addition, there was the fall of shelves in supermarkets and shops in the city, as well as minor cuts in the electricity supply throughout the day.
Last moment: third earthquake
At 23:06 on Tuesday, a third earthquake of less intensity was registered in the Atacama Region. According to the National Seismological Center the magnitude was 4.9 degrees, located 61 km north of Huasco.
