NEW JERSEY – Two police officers were killed in Newark Tuesday by a suspect armed with a long gun, according to law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation and officials.
The conditions of the injured officers were not immediately known. One was shot in the neck and another in the leg, according to the authorities report.
They were serving an arrest warrant at a house near Van Velsor Place and Chancellor Avenue in the state’s largest city at around 2pm when gunshots went off from an elevated position, possibly a window or roof, sources and officials said.
Only two shots were fired from the suspect’s gun, the senior source said.
The source said the suspect was not in custody, but the situation was under control and there were no further threats to the community. That source told our sister station NBC 4 New York that the neighborhood was blocked and the killer was believed to be in a building within that area.
SWAT vehicles and an army of agents have invaded the scene, the video shows. Federal investigators from the FBI and ATF confirmed they were also sending assets to the scene.
For his part, Governor Phil Murphy spoke about the event with the following message on Twitter:
“I am aware of and closely monitor the evolution of the situation in Newark.
I am in contact with local authorities and the state is providing the required resources. We will continue to support local law enforcement and ensure that all residents are safe.“.
