Two fighter jets collided yesterday in northeastern France. Two pilots were killed. The third pilot survived the crash, according to French authorities.
According to French media, one of the two victims was a pilot in training and the other an instructor. They sat together in one of the planes.
According to the French Air Force, the two Rafale fighter jets crashed when they returned from Germany where the fuel was renewed. They struck near Colombey-les-Belles, a town near Nancy. The planes were based at the Saint-Dizier base in north-east France.
The remaining pilot was in the other jetty. He had freed himself from the plane with his seat before the crash. It was quickly found. The pilot was injured but conscious. The search continued throughout the day for the occupants of the other plane. The army, police, fire brigade and civilian rescue services were deployed.
Just before midnight, French President Macron announced that the two missing pilots had been found dead.
It is not yet clear what caused the planes to crash. Accidents involving Rafale fighter jets are extremely rare, according to French media. In 2007, a plane crashed in the Corrèze region, killing the pilot. In 2009, two planes crashed off the coast of Perpignan. One passenger was killed.
