London. Police said Saturday that two people have died after being attacked in separate incidents at or near the Notting Hill Carnival last weekend, one of the world’s largest street festivals.
The victims, a mother attending the annual event in west London with her young son, and a chef who had previously worked with culinary celebrity Gordon Ramsay, had been hospitalized since the attacks.
London’s Metropolitan Police, which has charged two people suspected of carrying out separate attacks, revealed earlier this week that eight people were stabbed and hundreds arrested during the celebration of British Afro-Caribbean culture, which takes place every year on the streets of Notting Hill and surrounding districts.
Cher Maximen, 32, was stabbed in the groin in broad daylight last Sunday after trying to intervene in a fight that broke out. She died on Saturday morning.
She had attended the event with her three-year-old daughter and other family and friends.
A London court ordered a 20-year-old man into custody on Wednesday after he was charged with attempted murder.
The Metropolitan Police said the charge would be “reviewed” by prosecutors following Maximen’s death.
Separately, chef Mussie Imnetu died on Friday night after being found unconscious on Monday evening with a head injury outside a restaurant in west London, which was packed with carnival-goers.
The 41-year-old Swedish-born chef was visiting the UK on business from Dubai, where he lives and works, but is not believed to have been at the carnival, police said.
A 31-year-old man appeared in court on Friday charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent, but that charge will also be reviewed, police said.
