Two People Infected with Pig Influenza Strains from Agricultural Fairs, CDC Reports

(CNN) — The US Centers for Disease Control and Control (CDC) announced, on Friday, that two people had been infected with influenza strains that usually spread among pigs, and it appears that the blame lies with pig fairs within agricultural fairs.

Each patient developed influenza-like symptoms about 10 days after visiting pig fairs at two different agricultural fairs in early and late July. Neither of them was hospitalized, and the infection did not appear to have spread to other people, according to the CDC.

Both cases were monitored by the Michigan Department of Health.

A few such cases appear in the United States each year, usually related to pig fairs.

However, the disease highlights the possibility that influenza viruses have the ability to pass from animals (such as birds and pigs) to humans.

Such cases do not cause additional problems due to the adaptation of viruses to infect other species, but since there is a possibility that such infections may cause the spread of the disease, the Centers for Disease Control confirmed that they always track these cases and fully examine them.

People who are immunocompromised are more susceptible to indirect infection.

And the Centers for Disease Control recommended that they avoid pig fairs, or wear masks when around these animals.
