Accident
A 60-year-old driver hit two pedestrians on the sidewalk in Mortsel on Tuesday morning. They were seriously injured.
The accident happened around 7:30 am at the intersection with Grotesteenweg and Jozef Hermanslei in Mortsel.
“A driver who drove his car from Berchem swerved for an unknown reason,” says Kim Verdoodt, spokesperson for the Minos police zone. “The car drove onto the cycle and pedestrian path and hit two pedestrians. A cyclist was able to avoid the collision. The car then came to a stop against the facade of a hair salon.”
The driver of the car was trapped afterwards and had to be freed by the fire brigade. “Two pedestrians were taken to hospital with serious injuries. The driver, a 60-year-old man, was slightly injured, but was also taken to hospital,” says Verdoodt.
The driver took a negative alcohol test after the accident. The cause could possibly be a medical problem. “That is also being investigated,” the police said.
The facade of the hair salon was slightly damaged. The car needs to be towed.
