Two parallel specialized operations on the illegal distribution of goods without Bulgarian excise labels were conducted on Thursday by employees of the regional administrations in Karlovo and Stamboliyski.
On a municipal road near the village of Vedrare, uniformed men from the sub-Balkan town spotted a minibus loaded with smuggled tobacco weighing more than 31 kilograms. The 45-year-old driver of the vehicle was taken into police custody, against whom fast proceedings were instituted under Art. 234, para. 1 of the Penal Code.
The police in Stamboliyski have launched a preliminary investigation into a similar crime against a resident of Perushtitsa, from whose home almost 1,700 pieces of hand-rolled cigarettes without Bulgarian excise duty were seized.
