Jonas Bäckstrand, at the Swedish Accident Investigation Board, confirms that there are new unknown cracks. He says that it is interesting, but “that there is a risk that you over-interpret data before you have the overall picture”.
– Therefore, we want to be careful to draw some conclusions before our experts have compiled the data, he says to TT.
The cracks were found during the new investigations that are currently being conducted at Estonia’s wreck site for ten days. The background to the investigations is the information about holes in Estonia’s starboard side that was shown in a TV documentary last autumn.
The purpose of the feasibility study is to determine what measures are needed to continue to examine the holes in the wreck. The operation has been made possible by an amendment to the law on peace of mind from 1 July.
Data on the vessel and bottom conditions are collected using sonar and sonar methods and will be analyzed with the help of researchers from Stockholm University.
