two months after 9/11, 265 dead in New York in plane crash

Twenty years ago to the day, the United States is still reeling from the terrible attacks of September 11, 2001, after the collapse of the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York and the violent deaths of more than 3,500 people. . George Bush had decided to invade Afghanistan a few weeks earlier, in retaliation, to overthrow the Taliban regime, accused of harboring the terrorists of Al-Qaida, a movement led by Bin Laden who claimed responsibility for the attacks.

And the scenario seems to be happening again. An airliner crashes in a residential area of the American megalopolis, all the passengers die in the crash… Except this time, it is indeed an accident.

Turbulence from take-off

American Airlines Flight 587 scheduled to fly to the Dominican Republic crashed just over two minutes after takeoff from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. The terrorist thesis, immediately privileged given the context, was quickly swept aside. The Airbus A300 was indeed caught in turbulence caused by a larger plane (a Boeing 747 of Japan Airlines) which took off just before it.

After falling from nearly 1000 meters above sea level, the aircraft crashed in the district of Queens. The 260 people on board, 251 passengers and 9 crew members (mainly Americans and Dominicans), died in the crash. The death toll increases with five other deaths: residents who died in the fire in their homes.

One of the deadliest plane crashes

Almost three years later, as the black boxes spoke and the company (American Airlines) and the manufacturer (Airbus) shifted responsibility to each other, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigation concluded that the cause of the crash was due to excessive use of the rudder to straighten the aircraft in the face of turbulence.

This accident is among the deadliest ever recorded in the world. In recent years, only the Malaysia Airlines flight, which was shot down in flight over Ukraine, has caused more deaths (298).
