Two monkeypox-related deaths in Spain

Madrid, July 30, LETA–AFP. Two monkeypox-related deaths have already been registered in Spain, the Spanish Ministry of Health announced on Saturday.

A day earlier, Spanish authorities announced the first death, believed to be the first not only in Spain but also in Europe.

“Out of 3,750 patients, 120 have been hospitalized and two have died,” the ministry said on Saturday.

Previously, the ministry explained that most of the infected are men who have had sex with other men. A relatively small number of women are also infected.

Experts suspect that monkeypox outbreaks in Europe and North America were fueled by sex at two rave parties in Belgium and Spain.

The current outbreak of monkeypox in more than 70 countries is the largest outbreak of the disease to date. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared it a “global emergency” on July 23.
