The Rotterdam police arrested two men, 17 and 27 years old, for a video clip featuring firearms and stabbing weapons. The men are suspected of possession of weapons.
The police do not report which clip it is, but show a screenshot from the video from Shooter 2.0 of the Rotterdam rappers Qlas and Blacka, which was published on Friday. In the clip, one of the men plays a Kalashnikov like a guitar.
The police found 300 euros in counterfeit money when invading the homes of both men, but found no weapons there.
Qlas and Blacka make so-called drill rap, a music genre that has spread from the American city of Chicago to the United Kingdom and also gained a foothold in the Netherlands some time ago.
The Dutch police have expressed concern about the genre several times. In drill rap-clips is often waved with knives and firearms and sometimes rivals are also threatened.
Police will act harder against clips
The police are increasingly confronted with the possession of weapons from sometimes very young people, says chief of the Rotterdam police unit Hans Visser. At the same time he sees an increase in serious shooting and stabbing incidents.
The police suspect that drill rap leads to incidents of violence, because rappers challenge and insult each other. The police are currently investigating whether or not drill raps played a role in the death mark of rapper Jay-Ronne Grootfaam.
Visser therefore says that the police, together with the mayor of Rotterdam and the Public Prosecution Service, have decided to take immediate action against these types of clips, in which “real violence lies in wait” and the possession and use of weapons is normalized.
