Two Malaysians Allegedly Involved in ISIS and Arrested by the Taliban

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Malaysia seeking assistance from overseas security agencies to confirm media reports that two of its nationals have been arrested by Taliban in Afghanistan because of their alleged involvement in the ISIS, said the country’s top police official, Saturday (28/8).

Inspector General of Police Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said authorities had no information about the involvement of Malaysians in militant groups in Afghanistan.

“The Royal Malaysian Police have asked the overseas security agencies to confirm the reports as well as the allegations,” he said in a statement. REUTERS.

“An investigation is also underway to find out whether the report involves Malaysian Islamic State fighters who are already overseas.”

British publication The Times on Saturday had reported the arrests of six ISIS members, including two Malaysians, citing a Taliban official.

In the past decade, dozens of Malaysians have fled their country to fight with Islamic State in Syria and other countries, although some have been allowed to return under conditions set by the authorities.

It is not clear how many are left overseas.

Previously, it was reported that an air strike using a United States (US) drone was said to have killed two ISIS leaders in Afghanistan.

In a statement on Saturday, the US Department of Defense (Pentagon) said in addition to the deaths of the two leaders, a number of other militants were injured. However, it is claimed that no civilians were injured in the attack on Saturday morning.

The airstrike came two days after Thursday’s suicide bombing at Kabul Airport, Afghanistan, killed a number of people including 13 US servicemen.

However, the Pentagon declined to clarify whether the people targeted by the US airstrike were those directly involved with the suicide bombing at the airport.

“They are ISIS-K planners and facilitators. That’s reason enough [untuk serangan udara],” said Pentagon spokesman John Kirby.

“The fact that these two individuals are no longer walking the surface of the earth is a good thing,” he added.
