It is this church tower scene that made Stefanie and Ellen Radtke famous. Two shutters open, two pastors look and lean out and give each other a smacking kiss. This is how the trailer for “Anders Amen”, a YouTube channel that focuses on the two women, begins. Church, queer and lesbian? That doesn’t have to be a contradiction in terms, thinks the couple who work for the Protestant regional church in Lower Saxony.
Videos about life – and faith
In their videos, the pastors chat openly about their lives. Sometimes it’s about studying theology, sometimes about coming out or the etiquette in the “gay sauna”. Embarrassing moments of worship are discussed, as are instructions for brewing beer or a visit to the cemetery.
The church does not have to be dreary and playful, is its message. And certainly not homophobic. Although the project has only been running since the beginning of 2020, the Radtkes were already on Stern TV, met with Barbara Schneberger and spoke to WDR talk show host Domian. They are loved, celebrated and abused. There is only one thing they cannot complain about: a lack of attention.
