In the category “The Baltic Event Works in Progress”, where projects with the strongest artistic vision are highlighted, the award went to director Matissas Kaža’s upcoming feature film “Neon Spring” – a contemporary drama about twenty-year-old Laina, , where he meets new friends and rediscovers his sexuality, but begins to gradually lose touch with reality and his previous life. The film’s dramaturgy and characters have been developed in the creative process of the film ensemble, inspired by the personal experience of real Riga youth, the overall dramaturgy of the film has been constructed with improvisation and etiquette.

The jury describes the award-winning project as “a modern and honest story of what happens when teenagers’ dreams of a wonderful future collide with a harsh reality that has nothing to do with Instagram pictures.” The financial amount of the prize is 1,500 euros, they are intended for the marketing expenses of the film for distribution in the Baltic States. The premiere of the film is planned for 2021.

In the category “Just Film Work in Progress”, which is taken care of by the children’s and youth film festival “Just Film”, the prize was awarded to the Latvian studio “Lokomotīve” and producer Roberts Vinovskis’ collaborative project with family film “The Sleeping Beast”, film “with children and for children”. The plot of the film follows ten-year-old Christian, who is faced with a choice: to do the right thing and stand up to his friends, or to succumb to peer pressure and please them. This is the story of a turning point in a young boy’s life, when he is forced to understand for himself what is good and what is bad.

The Latvian side of the film “Sleeping Beast” is also represented in the creative team by composer Kārlis Auzāns, sound director Matīss Krišjānis, editing director Andris Grants and a number of post-processing specialists. The premiere of the film is planned for 2021.

The Tallinn festival “Black Nights” takes place this year from November 13 to November 29 and, as already reported, this year Latvia is widely represented both with films in competitions and with upcoming projects in the film industry section “Industry @ Tallinn & Baltic Event Works in Progress”, which took place online in search of new opportunities, sales agents, festivals and international premieres for projects in production or post-production.
