Maria Alyokhina and Lucy Stein of the Russian punk band Pussy Paradise have gone on hunger strike in prison, the DPA reported, citing independent Russian media.

According to the Medusa news website and the human rights portal OVD-Info, the two ladies are demanding that they be placed in a cell and that the illegal ban on talking be lifted.

Alekhina and Stein are serving a two-week sentence on charges of organizing a demonstration earlier this month in support of opposition activist Alexei Navalny, who is also in prison.

Members of Pussy Paradise have been repeatedly detained by Russian police and sentenced to prison after they became known around the world in 2012 for their “punk prayer” at Moscow’s Christ the Savior Church. Their action was a protest against the support of the church’s top clergy for President Vladimir Putin.
