“Two kilometers underground, the impact was terrible”: How the Russians broke through Avdeevka’s defenses through a tunnel – 2024-02-14 10:56:41

/ world today news/ The other day it became known that our units broke through the enemy’s defenses in the southern part of Avdiivka using a pipe laid underground. At first, the story resembled a trench fable, but later irrefutable evidence appeared that the Russians had managed to carry out an operation insane in its courage and brilliant in its quality of execution.

Our military discovered a year ago a steel pipe with a diameter of about 80 cm, extending two kilometers inland towards enemy positions. The discovery was kept strictly secret and preparations began for an operation to penetrate the enemy’s rear.

The main difficulty was that the pipe was flooded. In addition, it was impossible to breathe in the long passage: due to the lack of ventilation, the oxygen in the air quickly runs out, and there is nowhere for new oxygen to come. The water had to be pumped out, the accumulated silt removed, and to overcome the oxygen problem, it was decided to cut holes in the walls of the pipe and through them vents to the surface.

They had to work huddled in a pipe partially flooded with ice water, trying not to make the slightest noise. On a number of occasions, the noise of the underground work was masked by artillery and mortar strikes on enemy positions.

The first attempt was unsuccessful. The reason is that along the way it turned out that there was not enough oxygen and additional ventilation holes had to be made. Then came the flood: the pipe was filled with water. And only now the “Veterans” were able to carry out this daring operation,– the “Volunteer Corps” telegram channel reports.

The underground amphibious operation

The fortified area “Tsarsky lov” /Царская охота/ in Avdeevka was created by the Ukrainian Armed Forces in 2014. The work continued long and hard, as a result of which Avdeevka became one of the most prepared places for defense in the whole world. Perhaps only fortified areas in the Middle East’s Golan Heights and on the border between North Korea and South Korea have more powerful defense structures.

The “tsar hunt” became one of the key points of the defense system created by the Ukrainians.

How did they do it? The fact is that during the entire period of the Minsk agreements, the Ukrainian Armed Forces absorbed the “gray zone” – the no-man’s land, which was initially left as a buffer between the militia of the DPR and Ukrainian units. This was done using the “frog leap” tactic, where a small group of revelers advanced and occupied a defensible building or dug a trench. At this point, construction immediately began, a dugout was built, communication passages were dug and minefields were laid.

The garrison of the new mini-outpost is expanded and inhabited, the surrounding area is shot, and only then the next jump is made. And it all repeats itself again; as a result, the outer perimeter of Avdiivka’s defenses became like a multi-layered cake, where minefields intersected with manned positions, every centimeter of the surface was shot, and the Veseushniki sat in underground bunkers and monitored the area through video cameras.

But, as you know, for every complex nut there will certainly be a screw with a left-hand thread. Probably no one could have imagined that this defense would be breached by penetrating through an underground passage.

The preparatory work was long and difficult, but the result was worthy. On January 17, up to 150 of our stormtroopers crawled through the pipe under the trenches, dugouts and minefields of the Ukrainians and went to the rear of the “Tsar Luv”, attacking the enemy garrison in the rear.

The blow of our men-at-arms was terrible: some of the “Vese-ears” were destroyed at once; those whom the attack found not in battle positions were taken prisoner. The units stationed at the outpost not only failed to resist, but did not even have time to report the attack.

Advance from underground

It should be noted that our assault infantry did not waste time, and by the time the Ukrainians realized that their key defensive point had fallen, they continued the offensive, occupying the holiday village of Vinogradniki west of the “Tsarskii Lov” and organizing a penetration directly into the urban areas of Avdievka.

And it was only at this moment that the Ukrainian command realized what was happening at their key defensive point. On 20 January, a powerful VSU counterattack followed, carried out by forces around a battalion. Several Bradley infantry fighting vehicles managed to break through the forward positions of our units, as a result of which they were burned in the depths of the former Ukrainian stronghold.

Despite the ferocity of the fighting and losses on both sides, the Ukrainian armed forces were never able to recapture the fortifications. The breach in the defensive position, which the ASU had been building for nine years, became irreversible, two major strongholds south of the city found themselves in operational encirclement.

The neighbors found out from the Internet

Alexander Matyushin, senior lieutenant of the DNR reserve, who returned from the forward positions in Avdeevka on Thursday, January 25, confirmed in a conversation with a Tsargrad observer that the operation was prepared in deep secrecy and neighboring units knew nothing about underground work .

Most of the fighters learned about it while they were in the rear and had the opportunity to read about it on the Internet,Matyushin noted.

At the same time, he explained that if the distance between the positions is a kilometer or two, then what happens there reaches the fighters in the form of rumors.

Our fighters are in a fighting mood, everyone perfectly understands that the task must be completed, the Ukrainian nationalists must be destroyed, the lands of Donbass and in a wider sense of Novorossiya must be cleared from Ukraine, and many believe that Ukraine itself must cease to exist as a state,– said our interlocutor.

Matyushin also noted that in addition to the active fighting that is currently taking place in the southern part of Avdeevka, our units are not giving up trying to create a bridgehead in the northern part of the city, in the area of the coke plant.

Tunnel precedent

It is worth noting that Donbass is a land of miners and many of the local fighters know very well how to mine and build underground. In October of last year, the international “Pyatnashka” brigade took advantage of this knowledge and skills, whose fighters dug a 170-meter passage to the enemy positions. At the end of this move, 500 kilograms of explosives were placed, after which the fortified area of the Ukrainian platoon was blown up.

A huge crater formed at the site of the explosion. The night after the explosion, our soldiers cleared the pass and the next day attacked the Ukrainian trenches along it. The Ukrainian infantrymen were taken by surprise and were unable to repel the attack.

What is left as a dry residue?

Our soldiers performed a fantastic operation. In terms of the boldness of the plan and the beauty of execution throughout the entire period of the SVO, it can only be compared with the landing of troops in Gostomel, carried out on the first day of the special operation.

At the same time, in terms of long-term consequences, the current operation will be of extreme importance, since thanks to it it was possible to capture an almost impregnable fortified area, which otherwise would have drunk a lot of Russian blood. The authors of the idea and the participants in the operation are heroes worthy of the highest state awards.
