Two killed in a Ukrainian drone attack in Donetsk
Kyiv – AFP
At least two civilians were killed in an overnight exchange of air strikes between Russia and Ukraine, officials from both countries said Wednesday.
Ukraine has been subjected to continuous aerial bombardment by Russian forces for nearly two years, and it is calling on its Western allies to strengthen its defense systems.
In recent months, Ukraine has intensified its attacks with marches on Russian territory, especially targeting border areas, the capital, Moscow, and the city of Saint Petersburg in the north of the country.
The mayor of Gorlivka in Donetsk, one of the Ukrainian regions annexed by Russia, said that two civilians were killed and another was injured in an attack by a Ukrainian drone.
Ivan Prikhodko, who is loyal to Moscow, said on Telegram, “Due to an aerial bombardment by Ukrainian forces with a drone on the road between Gorlivka and Donetsk, two civilians were killed and another was injured.”
The Russian Ministry of Defense said in a statement published on its website that its air defenses destroyed a Ukrainian drone over the Pskov region.
For its part, Ukraine announced that Russian forces launched an attack with 20 drones and three missiles during the night, and that air defense systems shot down more than 12 drones.
The Ukrainian Air Force explained that Russia launched 20 Iranian-made drones and three ballistic missiles at Ukraine.
He added that the air defenses, especially in the southern and eastern regions on the front, shot down the drones, without mentioning the missiles.
Authorities in the Kharkiv region (east) bordering Russia said that a supermarket and homes were damaged in the attack, which resulted in three people being injured.
Officials reported that one person was also injured in the Mykolaev region (south).
President Volodymyr Zelensky said that regaining control of Ukraine’s airspace this year is a priority, to make progress on the front.
