At the Lima airport, a LATAM Airlines plane crashed into a fire truck as it crossed the runway during takeoff.
Two firefighters died in the accident in the Peruvian capital.
A security camera recorded the incident. The images show fire and large clouds of smoke emanating from the aircraft’s right wing shortly after the collision. The aircraft then still has considerable speed. Finally, the firefighters manage to put out the burning wing in time.
The two people who were aboard the fire engine during the collision did not survive the impact. According to the airline, there were 102 passengers on board the plane on the domestic flight. No passengers or crew were seriously injured in the crash.
One of the passengers shared a photo on Twitter shortly after the crash. “When life gives you a second chance,” the man captioned the photo, which still shows foam on his face.

It is still unclear why firefighters entered the runway as the plane was taking off. The Peruvian Public Prosecutor (OM) says it is investigating the incident as a possible homicide.
Lima’s Aeropuerto Internacional Jorge Chavez, Peru’s main airport, will remain closed to air traffic until at least Saturday afternoon.
