Two influencers died in a boat accident. Despite warnings, police said they chose not to wear life jackets so as not to ruin their selfies.
Two Brazilian influencers have died after a boat accident in a notorious stretch of coast in the São Vicente region on the São Paulo coast. The women, aged 27 and 37, were traveling on a crowded boat after a celebration. According to police, they had refrained from wearing life jackets because they would “ruin their tanning and their selfies.”
The guests had celebrated a party on a yacht before the accident on September 29th. The accident boat, which according to media reports was designed for a maximum of five people, was supposed to bring seven people back to shore. As local media report, the boat driver is said to have complied with the passengers’ requests to bring them back to the coast. A strong wave hit the overloaded boat and caused it to capsize.
After the accident, rescue efforts began quickly. The lifeless body of one of the two women was recovered from the sea by the Brazilian Coast Guard. The second body was discovered days later on a beach in Itaquitanduva. The skipper and four other passengers survived the accident.
Police are currently investigating whether negligence through overloading and disregard for safety regulations contributed to the women’s deaths. Police Commissioner Marcos Alexandre Alfino said: “We are carefully examining the case to determine whether the accident was caused by negligence or human error.”
The “Garganta do Diabo” (“Devil’s Jaws”), as the stretch of coast is known, is notorious for strong currents and unpredictable water conditions. The overloading of the boat is also seen as a critical factor in the accident.
